The sled dog Adventure in Ely, Minnesota.
White Wilderness

North Woods Trek Standard
Fresh snow. First tracks. Snow hanging on aromatic balsams. A dog team flowing silently across a pristine lake. It’s the mystery of winter that calls some of us. It may have called you, but then you looked at the mercury, poured another cup of coffee and had second thoughts. Well, this trip is for those curious enough to want to leave the cozy armchair for the mystery of the winter sky, the call of the wolves at night, the invigoration of learning to be comfortable in the winter. With the right gear, skills and coaching, winter camping can be incredibly rewarding. Winter camping by dog team is twice as rewarding. Just think: no bugs, no crowds, and the best hot cocoa ever.
  • 3-4 days dog sledding (Deluxe trip=4)
  • 2 nights in a lodge and 2 nights camping. The Deluxe trip features 1 additional night in a heated yurt
  • Premiere style (you drive your own team for the entire trip)
  • Explore over 60 miles of the Superior National Forest by dog team. (BWCAW travel is condition dependent)
  • Learn winter camping and wilderness travel skills
  • Physically active and adventurous trip
  • No previous camping or dog sledding experience necessary
  • Intermediate level trip - physically active, unknown challenges, remote wilderness travel

  • You’ll get your own team of 4-6 canine companions on this active adventure. Learn to harness your team of enthusiastic Alaskan Huskies and then step on to the runners of the dogsled. You’ll learn to drive your own dog team for 3 days, gaining skills and confidence each day. We’ll carry all of our provisions with us as we explore scenic trails, frozen marshes, and pristine lakes by dog team. Our route departs conveniently from our kennel and disappears into 100’s of miles of rewarding trails on the Superior National Forest and within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. You’ll return 3 days later, likely with stories about each of your dogs, sledding adventures and a new found confidence and appreciation of the northwoods winter.

Along the way, we’ll teach you all the skills to be warm and comfortable in the winter. You’ll be actively involved in setting up our winter camp each night and caring for the dogs. Our winter camps are typically tucked in to secluded bays of remote lakes, and include hearty dinners and homemade desserts around a toasty warming fire, and restful nights tucked in to a proven -40F sleeping bag system inside a winter expedition tent. As your skills increase, we’ll explore progressively more dynamic terrain, navigate frozen marshes, thread narrow trails and travel deeper in to the wilderness.

Want more?? Add an additional day and night to the standard trek. Do it in style with an overnight stay at our cozy heated backcountry yurt. The yurt is located on our trail system and near the BWCAW, so it dovetails nicely in to either the start or end of our dogsled itinerary. Tucked away on a pristine lake, this simple round structure provides one step up from winter camping. A propane heater, cook stove, lights and outhouse make for simple, yet comfortable accommodations on the trail.

Rounding a corning on a lake in the BWCA Wilderness.

All totaled, we will likely cover 80-100 miles on this journey on a route that finishes at the kennel. The final night of the trip is back at the lodge. Trip concludes with breakfast the following morning.

Our guides see to it that you learn not only to mush, but also learn to winter camp comfortably. All winter camping equipment is provided. Parka, wind pants, and winter boots are available for rent.

Join one of the scheduled trips listed below, or gather a group of 3 or more together and we can customize this trip for your group, with either premier or traditional style sledding.
