The International Wolf Center in Ely has a captive wolf pack. Every 4 years they get the opportunity to raise a few puppies to add to the group. To make sure these puppies are well socialized they have 30 volunteers to work with them. As you can imagine they get a lot of people to apply for the position of nanny and they have to make a decision as to whom is best for the job. What they need is a way to see who is willing to get dirty and who is not.
Sled dogs and their puppies --- that is the solution. So to the White Wilderness Kennel they came, and for three weekends they got down and dirty with the dogs.
Now I have never helped with a project like this before and had no idea of what to expect. In drove two vans and left off 20 people. The wolf center broke them into groups and wanted them to take turns with the puppies and with the adult dogs. What to do; I was not going to let them in the dog yard if I was not there and I thought the best thing to do with the puppies was to send them on a walk. So I called over Morgan, my 6 year old daughter. “Morgan take these 9 puppies and 10 people for a walk” And off she went with the whole crew in tow. Including her 4 year- old brother. There is just something about a kid who has been raised with animals who just seems to have the natural instincts as to what to do. The training was a success.
So now we are not only a sled dog training center and sled dog touring operator but we are also willing to do wolf nanny training.
